Dr. Pedro Van Meurs’ Lecture at PU

On Friday, November 9, 2018, Dr. Pedro Van Meurs visited the PU campus and delivered a lecture titled “World Fiscal System for Oil and Gas” to PU students at the General Smart Room.

Dr. Van Meurs is an economy geologist and professor at the London Petroleum Academy. He previously worked with the Federal Government of Canada as an international petroleum economist until 1973. Since 1974, he has been an independent consultant in petroleum fiscal systems and policies. Dr. Van Meurs’s firm has provided services to more than 90 governments all over the world. In 2012, he completed a fiscal comparative study that later became one of the most influential studies ever published in the field.

Dr. Van Meurs discussed the nature of fiscal features around the world and provided an overview of the types of fiscal systems, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Afterwards, Dr. Van Meurs elaborated on how Lebanon manages its fiscal systems and mentioned that the Lebanese government has recently adopted a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) that will greatly benefit the petroleum industry in the country.

Following the lecture, Dr. Pedro engaged in a question-and-answer session with PU students.

In closing, a special and big thanks goes to Mr. Fawzi Khalife for inviting an outstanding economy geologist to deliver such an informative lecture.
